'Unsung Hero' review: For King & Country tells its own story Los Angeles Times

Unhappy with his original career choice, League was fixated on the idea of opening his own movie theater. He spent the rest of that week researching the exhibition business—driving to Los Angeles to pick up a copy of Boxoffice Pro magazine as a reference—and putting together a rough business plan. After reopening last August, Alamo Drafthouse reinvented its entire operating model to create the safest possible indoor gathering place – safer even than supermarkets, bars, and restaurants.

Guests order all food and drinks from servers who quietly attend to them throughout the movie from inside the theater. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the pre-show entertainment. Instead of a barrage of advertising, Alamo Drafthouse shows a curated collection of rare and humorous clips themed to each feature. Austin, TX — June 1, 2021 — Theaters are coming back and Alamo Drafthouse is primed to meet the demand. This also marks the end of the company’s Chapter 11 filing with the completion of the sale to Altamont Capital Partners, funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League. Founded in 1997, Alamo Drafthouse has been heralded for unique programming events, great food and drinks, and high exhibition standards, earning accolades including “Best Theater Ever” by Time Magazine and “The Coolest Theater in the World” by Wired.

The Alamo Family

From aviation design elements throughout the lobby and hallways, to a horde of snakes attacking a plane at the entrance to The Big Show, the theme continues throughout the building and completely takes flight in the theater’s specialty bar, Departures. Alamo Drafthouse has refocused its efforts on exhibition in recent years. Ancillary properties, like the movie-focused website Birth.Movies.Death, specialty distributor Drafthouse Films, and the movie merchandise brand Mondo, have been sold since the onset of the pandemic. Drafthouse Films launched in 2010 with its first title, the British dark comedy Four Lions, and continued contributing festival acquisitions to U.S. theaters until League stepped away to co-found Neon in 2017.

About Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

In August 2004, the second largest Alamo (Westlakes) opened in San Antonio, Texas, with eight screens.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is an American cinema chain founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas, which is famous for serving dinner and drinks during the movie, as well as its strict policy of requiring its audiences to maintain proper cinema-going etiquette. Alamo Drafthouse is also home to HappyLand Movie Mini Golf, which is a movie-themed miniature golf course. Guests can tee up 30 minutes before the first movie screening of the day and play until the last movie of the day starts. The director, a celebrity portraitist, grew up on the sets of Canada’s most iconic filmmaker – her father David Cronenberg – and started directing with music videos and short films including The Endings (2018) and The Death of David Cronenberg (2021).

Alamo Drafthouse is also headed to the Gateway City with Alamo Drafthouse’s first theater in St. Louis. Located at the upcoming City Foundry STL development in St. Louis’ Midtown district, Alamo Drafthouse St. Louis is a 10-screen theater from franchise partner St. Louis Alamo Movies, LLC and is expected to open in Spring 2022. Additionally, the previously announced Staten Island theater is still in development with the Flying Guillotine, a martial arts-inspired bar in partnership with Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA.

Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual BDSM relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. And that’s BDSM, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism. There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg‘s feature directorial debut. Rosenthal’s promotion comes as the Texas-based chain, popular for its in-theater dining and fan-forward approach to moviegoing, is reportedly exploring a sale. Several Hollywood studios were approached to assess their interest in buying the company, according to two sources.

“Unsung Hero” follows a predictable narrative path of struggles and salvation, but it’s not a traditional music biopic — it doesn’t start with a record deal, it ends with one. The focus is on their hardships to get to that record deal, which is clearly what matters to filmmaker Joel Smallbone. It’s not the success, the Grammys, the stadium concerts, but the ways they stuck together, eked it out, allowed themselves to dream, all thanks to their mother, who never let David’s challenges get in the way of her kids’ imaginations.

When does Alamo Drafthouse open?

Without that self-reflection, it can slip into murky, confusing territory. This space is where the new film “Unsung Hero,” which is billed as a “For King & Country Film,” exists. Mother’s Day is better with our lineup of mom-approved movies, a refreshingly floral new mug, gift cards, and a fabulous Mother’s Day Feast.

A menu inspired by the movie and its character will also be available during the menu, with some featured items being a Blueberry Donut French Toast Bake, Breakfast Tacos and Desert Spring Water cocktail. A mix of old and new movies is on the lineup for Lubbock's Alamo Drafthouse's Brunch Screening in May and June. Dave Osborn is the regional features editor of the Naples Daily News and News-Press who enjoys your basic theater popcorn.

This created two different Alamo Drafthouse experiences—with different websites, menus, and management groups running their respective sides of the company. “By 2004, Karrie and I were having a hard time coming to grips with growth and moving beyond the Austin market,” he says. “That’s really why we split [the company], leaving Karrie and me to run the Austin locations. During that time, we focused our efforts on developing and defining the identity of the brand.” During that period, the Leagues launched projects like the Mondo movie-themed merchandise brand, in 2004, and Fantastic Fest, a genre film festival, in 2005. Alamo Drafthouse Crystal City is conveniently located near the Crystal City metro station, and free validated garage parking is available. During the “soft opening” period running through October 30th, guests will receive a 25% discount on select food and non-alcoholic beverages while staff trains and gets up to speed.

Of the first seven theaters, the downtown Austin theater was unique for being the host of many important film events in Austin, such as the Quentin Tarantino Film Festival and Harry Knowles's annual Butt-numb-a-thon. The acclaimed cinema company’s newest theater opens Monday, October 24th, with tickets on sale now. The new theater at Mercato in North Naples opens April 29, in the same location as Silverspot, which opened in 2009 ― one year after the outdoor shopping and entertainment center opened. To celebrate its opening, Alamo Drafthouse is offering 25% certain menu items for guests that visit the theater between April 29 and May 2.

But the film itself, as an artistic product, feels limited in its observational scope, because the filmmaker doesn’t have any distance from the material. Smallbone is a fine actor, but alongside Ramsey, he’s a limited filmmaker. Their visual style is drab at best, and the storytelling lacks the kind of self-reflection that might elevate this project. As it is, “Unsung Hero” feels more like band merch than an insightful family portrait.

September through November 2024 marks movies from 1979, with “Apocalypse Now,” “The Deer Hunter,” and “Stalker” screening. The program closes out with films from 1974 like “The Godfather Part II” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” from October through December. Additionally, Alamo Drafthouse protects the theatrical experience with a zero tolerance policy for people who disrupt the film with talking or texting. Alamo Drafthouse’s “Don’t Talk” PSAs have frequently received national attention, and have featured former Texas Governor Ann Richards, Jeff Goldblum and a velociraptor, Georgie from IT, THE ROOM director and star Tommy Wiseau, and one very angry voicemail. Located on the second floor and featuring an outdoor patio, Departures will offer a curated mix of local and national craft beer, wine, and a special drink menu of signature aviation-themed cocktails.
